NEW YORK?? A woman is in custody in the death of a man who was shoved in front of a speeding subway train, and she "made statements implicating herself," New York City police said Saturday.
Detectives questioned her but aren't releasing the 31-year-old suspect's name until she is formally charged, NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said in a brief statement. Among other things, investigators were arranging for witnesses to positively identify the woman in custody as the attacker, police said.
Sunando Sen, a 46-year-old Queens resident who was born in India and ran a printing shop, died Thursday night when a woman who had been muttering to herself on a train platform in Queens suddenly knocked him on the tracks as a train entered the station.
The woman fled after the attack. Police released security camera video showing her running from the station.
The attack was the second time this month that someone was pushed to their death in a New York City subway station. A homeless man was arrested in early December and accused of shoving a man in front of a train in Times Square. He is awaiting trial, and claimed he acted in self-defense.
Further details on how police managed to identify the suspect in Sen's death were not immediately available.
Investigators had been following up on tips from people who had seen the security video and were checking homeless shelters and psychiatric units in an attempt to identify the woman.
It was unclear whether she had any connection to Sen. Witnesses told police the two hadn't interacted on the platform as they both waited for the train.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama has signed into law a five-year extension of the U.S. government's authority to monitor the overseas activity of suspected foreign spies and terrorists.
The warrantless intercept program would have expired at the end of 2012 without the president's approval. The renewal bill won final passage in the Senate on Friday.
Known as the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, the law allows the government to monitor overseas phone calls and emails without obtaining a court order for each intercept.
The law does not apply to Americans. When Americans are targeted for surveillance, the government must get a warrant from a special 11-judge court of U.S. district judges appointed by the Supreme Court.

CHICAGO ? Terry Glover, the managing editor of Ebony magazine, has died of colon cancer at her Chicago home. She was 57. Ebony announced on its website that Glover died on Monday. Her husband, Kendall Glover, told the Chicago Tribune that his wife had been fighting cancer for about two years.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Senate leaders rushed to assemble a last-ditch agreement to avoid middle-class tax increases and possibly delay steep spending cuts in an urgent attempt to find common ground after weeks of postelection gridlock.
An impatient President Barack Obama pressed top lawmakers to cut a deal before the year-end deadline, even one that falls short of the ambitions he and congressional leaders may once have harbored for a bigger deficit reduction package.
"The hour for immediate action is here. It is now," Obama declared.
Following a White House meeting Friday among Obama and congressional leaders, aides to Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., began racing against the clock for a bipartisan bargain.
The leaders could present legislation to senators as early as Sunday, with a vote possible on Sunday or Monday.
The guest list for the White House meeting included Reid, McConnell, House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. But the key players were clearly Reid and McConnell, both of whom stayed behind briefly at the White House and huddled with their staffs and Obama's top legislative aide, Rob Nabors, in the West Wing Cabinet Room just outside the Oval Office.
Neither side expected compromise to be easy. However, McConnell and Reid voiced unexpected optimism that they could work toward a deal that could win support in both their camps.
Warned Reid: "Whatever we come up with is going to be imperfect."
Whatever manages to pass in the Senate, with its Democratic majority, would then face a second test in the Republican-controlled House.
Boehner, a Republican speaker who has struggled recently with anti-tax rebels inside his own party, said through an aide that he would await the results of the talks between the Senate and White House. A House vote could come as late as Wednesday, the final full day before a new Congress takes office.
Officials said there was a general understanding that any agreement would block scheduled income tax increases for middle-class earners while letting rates rise at upper-income levels.
Obama was sticking to his campaign call for increases above $250,000 in annual income, even though in recent negotiations he said he could accept $400,000.
The two sides also confronted a divide over estate taxes. Obama favors a higher tax than is currently in effect, but one senior Republican, Sen. Jon Kyl of Arizona, said he's "totally dead set" against it. Speaking of fellow GOP lawmakers, he said they harbor more opposition to an increase in the estate tax than to letting taxes on income and investments rise at upper levels.
But the estate tax was more likely to be used as a possible bargaining chip that Democrats could give away in exchange for higher rates for top earners and other Obama priorities.
Obama and Democrats want to prevent the expiration of unemployment benefits for about 2 million long-term jobless men and women, and there is widespread sentiment in both parties to shelter doctors from a 27 percent cut in Medicare fees.
Also likely to be included in the negotiations are taxes on dividends and capital gains, both of which are scheduled to rise with the new year. Also the alternative minimum tax, which, if left unchanged, could hit an estimated 28 million households for the first time and mean an average increase of more than $3,000.
The White House has shown increased concern about a possible doubling of milk prices if a farm bill is not passed in the next few days, although it is not clear whether that issue too might be included in the talks.
One Republican who was briefed on the White House meeting said Boehner made it clear he would leave in place spending cuts scheduled to take effect unless alternative savings were included in any compromise to offset them. In previous White House proposals, Obama has suggested finding enough cuts in government spending to put off the steeper cuts for up to six months.
Obama, speaking to reporters following his meeting with the congressional leaders, faulted a system that left crucial decisions to the last minute, a way of governing that he said the public finds "mindboggling."
"Outside of Washington nobody understands how it is that this seems to be a repeat pattern, over and over again," he said.
Still, Obama himself is part of the negotiating process, and his meeting with all four top leaders Friday was the first since Nov. 16. A phone call he placed Wednesday night to McConnell was the first the Republican leader had received from a Democrat on the fiscal talks since Thanksgiving.
Looking to add pressure on negotiators, Obama said he expects Reid to put legislation on the floor to prevent tax increases on the middle class and extend unemployment benefits ? an implicit challenge to Republicans to dare to vote against what polls show is popular.
The start of negotiations in the Senate marked a new endgame for discussions that have moved in fits and starts since the November election.
Boehner refused for weeks to accept any rate increases, and simultaneously accused Obama of skimping on the spending cuts he would support as part of a balanced deal to reduce deficits, remove the threat of spending cuts and prevent the across-the-board tax cuts.
Last week, the Ohio Republican presented a Plan B measure that would have let rates rise on million-dollar earners. That was well above Obama's latest offer, which called for a $400,000 threshold, but more than the speaker's rank and file were willing to accept.
Facing defeat, Boehner scrapped plans for a vote, leaving the economy on track for the cliff that political leaders in both parties had said they could avoid. In the aftermath, Democrats said they doubted any compromise was possible until Boehner has been elected to a second term as speaker when the new Congress convenes Thursday.

What I mean by this is that just because you post something online, doesn?t mean it?s meant for public consumption. Yes, this all sounds very conflated, and yes, Facebook privacy controls are about as easy to understand as left-handed scissors for a right-handed person. However, somewhere in this slow news big news cycle, publications started to tell the story that said Facebook CEO’s sister clearly didn’t understand Facebook’s privacy controls. This is simply not true, because the photo wasn’t private, it was personal.?Allow me to explain the difference. Private As A Peacock Private: confined to or intended only for the persons immediately concerned; confidential: a private meeting If something is “private” in your mind, it’s probably not a good idea to share it on the Internet…anywhere. I don’t care what types of controls a social network gives you. There’s no such thing as full-on “privacy” on the Internet. Do you know what is private? A good-old-fashioned photo in a scrapbook, passed around one by one at the dinner table during the holidays. If you see someone try to pull out their phone to snap a photo for Instagram purposes, you can say “HEY! That’s private.” This can’t be done on the Internet. Once something is out there, it can be screen-shotted, captured and re-shared just as easily as it was uploaded in the first place. As we learned with Snapchat and Poke, those sexy private photos and videos aren’t really “private” either. Students of the Academy will know that we promote the idea of story writing as a way to sell your ideas to clients. ?In my role as a tutor, I find that the idea of needing to ?write? scares many people but I also find, that almost everyone has the ability to write a story, if they try.
I am lucky, I enjoy the writing process and studied creative writing at University. ?I say lucky, not because that experience in itself gives me superior writing skills, but because my lecturers drummed into me two very important facts about writing. ?The first is that writing is a craft. ?It is not a super-natural ability you are just born with. ?Ok, some people do find that writing comes more naturally to them than others do, but even great writers must work at their craft. ?As writing is a craft it is something you can learn. So that is the good news. ? The second fact, related to the first, is that writer?s write. ?Writing comes more naturally to you the more you do it. ?Every writer cringes at work they did in their early years (and sometimes work they did yesterday too!) but they keep at it and if you do that too it will help you to develop your skills as a writer.

Todd Sherer, PhD, is Director of Technology Transfer at Emory University. Sherer and his staff in the Office of Technology Transfer manage more than 800 active technologies developed through basic research. But he is not just the Director of Technology Transfer. Sherer is also the current President of the Association of University Technology Managers(AUTM), which has as its core purpose the?supporting and advancing of academic technology transfer both within the United States and around the globe.On December 10, 2012, AUTM published the?results of the AUTM U.S. Licensing Activity Survey: FY2011, and the AUTM Canadian Licensing Activity Survey: FY2011. Among the findings of the survey were that the?58 institutions (i.e., 31 percent of the 186 respondents) reported that 2,821 of their licenses paid $662 million in running royalties based on $37 billion in product sales, implying an average royalty rate of 1.8 percent. ?The survey also contained very positive news about?startups founded around university technologies. Some 66 institutions (i.e., 35 percent of the 186 respondents) reported employment of 24,653 by 1,731 operational startups, an average of 14 employees per startup.
Upon receiving the press release I set up an interview with Sherer, which was conducted on December 14, 2012, via recorded telephone call. What follows is Part I of our two-part interview.
QUINN: Thanks for taking the time to chat with me today, Todd. I know that AUTM just released a survey earlier in the week, and I wanted to chat with you about that. First, why don?t you start off, tell us a little bit about the survey if you can and what AUTM learned.
SHERER: Well, the licensing survey is something we conduct every year. We?ve been doing that for 20 years now. And I would say the primary thing we learned is that despite the fact that we?re in the middle of a global financial crisis, maybe hopefully we?re beyond the middle of a global financial crisis; but despite the world economy that activity and technology transfer continues to be very strong. That?s not surprising, because it is the investment in research that drives the level of activity we see in Tech Transfer Office, and we know that at least up through the current timeframe that the investment in research has continued to increase every year, although there?s certainly uncertainty about what might happen in the future.
QUINN: And why is that uncertain do you think?
SHERER: I guess stating the obvious, the uncertainty about whether or not we?ll hit a fiscal cliff and whether or not, you know, we?ll face sequestration. And then that would result in across the board cuts I think. We experts have projected that in the short term alone, that would mean a 7% decrease in federal funding at our respective institutions. And then it kinda depends an awful lot on what happens from there as well.
QUINN: I just wanted to be clear about what we were talking about there, whether it was fiscal cliff related, because I?m sure you know more and more the very basis of university technology transfer is under attack. There are people who don?t like and would like to do away with Bayh-Dole.
SHERER: Yes. So I wasn?t speaking to that yet. At this point, I was only speaking to the fiscal sort of realities. But it is true that in the middle of this global financial crisis that everybody is pointing fingers at everybody else because we don?t have jobs in the world, and certainly this country wants more jobs. And my interpretation is that the theory sort of goes like this: That if we don?t have enough jobs, well then let?s ask the experts where job growth comes from. And the experts have said that net job growth comes from companies that are less than five years old. Okay, that?s great. What do young companies need? Well young companies need entrepreneurial talent. They need access to financial resources, and they need access to technology. And the way this eventually finds its back at the institution is that universities are recognized as a major source of new innovation and technology. I think some people follow that flow of logic and say well university technology transfer must be broken. We need to fix it, because we need more innovation to be available, because out of that innovation is where we get these young companies starting.
QUINN: Yeah. Does that make any sense to you whatsoever? I mean for me it makes no sense whatsoever, simply because you look at life as it existed prior to Bayh-Dole. And you look at life as it exists now after Bayh-Dole. And it?s night and day. There was no technology transfer before Bayh-Dole, and now we have widespread technology transfer, thousands, many thousands of companies have been started. Many, you know, tens of thousands, probably hundreds of thousands of jobs have been created. And people want to go back. It?s almost if they want to go back to the dark ages when this just didn?t happen. And I struggle to figure out what it is that these people are really thinking.
SHERER: Yeah, it is concerning. I mean it?s not hard to find people, whether it?s inventors or it?s start-up companies or it?s established companies. It?s not hard to find people that have got a complaint about how technology transfer, or this first step of the innovation pathway. It?s not even the first step. The first step is research. The second step is you?ve got a discovery; what will you do with it. Everybody has got an opinion about that second step. And it?s true; it?s a very -? it?s the most inefficient step of the ? -or one of the most inefficient steps of the innovation pathway. Because when you?re at the very beginning where risk is highest, then, you know, the law of the land is you invest less as risk is high, and you invest more as risk gets reduced. So we know the least about what the potential for this discovery is at the early steps of the innovation pathway. So it is an inefficient part of the pathway, and everybody recognizes that. But the problem is, in recognizing that inefficiency is that I think we find people grasping at fixes that aren?t really going to have an impact, and quite frankly could have a negative impact on innovation if they were pursued. And I would put trashing the Bayh-Dole Act, or doing something drastic, gutting the Bayh-Dole Act, in that category because the brilliance of the Bayh-Dole Act, as you already know, is that aligned ownership control and passion in the right location, so that you had both the motivation and the legal entitlement in the same place so that you could pursue these inventions.
QUINN: Do you suppose that some of what is going on is people that are advocating against Bayh-Dole really don?t seem to understand the limitations on what university research is all about? I hear a lot of people talk about how, well the universities are the ones that are developing these drugs, or developing these treatments. And that?s? just not true. Could you talk to that a little bit about what is it that the university members actually do?
SHERER: Yeah. And I think what you?re referring to is that people have taken a look at the sixty, sixty-five billion dollars a year of federal money that goes into research, and then compared that to the two billion dollars, or two and a half billion dollars, of licensing revenue that comes out , and they jump to the conclusion that that?s a bad return on the investment in federal research. And that?s just a non sequitur. I mean there?s no reason to link, it doesn?t logically make sense to link the investment in federal research with licensing revenue. The primary reasons and metrics that should be associated with the investment in federal research are things like publications, and, you know, training a workforce of Ph.D. and other advanced degree level students, and advancing the world?s knowledge around important subject matters. Only in rare cases should one expect that kind of an activity to lead to something that might have commercial potential. And so that?s the reason why putting the two of those together, those two numbers together, just doesn?t make sense. Another thing that it seems like sometimes our critics do is they want to link the investment in federal research with the number of new drug approvals, as though universities are the parties that are securing those new drug approvals. Again, you know, these are very early-stage, embryonic stage, invention discoveries that come out of federal research. Those get licensed into start-up companies or biotech companies or pharmaceutical companies, or other companies in the physical sciences space who will actually develop products and eventually put them on the market.
QUINN: Yeah. And let me ask you, well maybe even a little bit more direct. Universities, when they license something, it is not ready for a shelf, correct?
SHERER: That is correct.
QUINN: And many times, there?s going to be many years of commercialization research that needs to be layered on top of the basic scientific breakthroughs that the universities have made?
SHERER: Right. Years, and in the case of new drugs, hundreds of millions of dollars will need to be invested above and beyond what has already been invested in the research in order to get that new product to market. I had a great example one time. We had a member of the business community who had convinced a president I worked ? of a former institution I worked for that you guys are sitting on a gold mine. You just don?t realize it. And he?d come out of the IT sector, but he thought he understood how it worked in the life science sectors as well. And so he marched into my office, and I thought how am I going to make my point about the investment decisions I have to make on behalf of the institution. So I handed him a two-paragraph non-confidential summary talking about a new protein sequence that we had just ?- one of our researchers had just discovered. And we were trying to make a decision about whether or not to file a patent on that protein sequence, because the protein in question was thought to play a role in a cell signaling process that was thought to play a role in a disease process, neither of which had really been established. I had to make a decision about whether or not to file a patent, because once the publication is out and the world knows about the protein sequence, well then we lose our composition of matter coverage. He took a look at that and he said, ?Well I?m going to need a lot more information.? I said, ?There isn?t any more at this point in time. This is all we have.? He went away and I never saw him again.
QUINN: Yes, and that?s really the frustrating. The role of the university is to engage in almost speculative research, research for the purpose of forwarding science. And then if anything comes from that, that?s great because there?s so many other things that go into that. We want the universities to be researching things that commercial companies wouldn?t otherwise undertake. And we want the educational value. But let?s shift gears a bit. With respect to the survey, it sounds like it?s good news. Are you happy? Is AUTM happy? Are the members happy? Or are there things that you still want to really focus on trying to improve?
SHERER: Well, you can see what the trends look like. And sometimes people get so caught up in trying to compare Institution A to Institution B. And at that level, I just don?t think the survey is as helpful, because there are just a lot of additional things that go into whether or not this institution has been in the business long enough, or gotten lucky and had its big hit, and another institution hasn?t.
But what the survey is extremely useful in doing is showing out trends, as well as sort of the overall impact. And so again, we?re quite happy that the survey once again, you know, that we had a good number of respondents. But we added a couple of new questions, because we?re trying to get more at the economic impact. It used to be, and I still think, that the ultimate validation of a tech transfer program is new products on the market. It doesn?t matter whether those products make money or don?t make money. That?s the ultimate validation, that we not only transferring technology, because you can do a deal and transfer technology, but the question is, is the public benefiting from the investment in research. In order for that happen and be demonstrated, I think we need new products on the market. And what we found in this global financial crisis and visits to the Hill, is it?s not necessarily good enough to talk about products. We?ve got to talk about jobs created.
QUINN: Right.
SHERER:?And so we added two new questions to the survey this year. And not surprisingly, we didn?t get a huge response to answering those questions, in part because it?s not dated, that people are already automatically tracking within their databases in their offices. And so what we hope is that those two new questions will continue to ?- the number of respondents will continue to increase, and we?ll have just as many respondents in the future answering those questions as we currently do all the questions that have been around for, in some cases, 20 years, and in other cases five or 10 years.
QUINN:?And what were those questions?
SHERER:?One is estimating the number of actual net product sales. So we report royalties. If we report two billion dollars in royalties, that?s just, as you know, that?s a percentage of what the actual sales of products are.
QUINN:?Right.
SHERER:?And so one of the questions we?re trying to get at is what are the total sales of those products.
QUINN:?That would be useful information. I saw in the press release that kind of worked backwards and say that should mean that this amount of product was sold as a result of that particular licensing royalty, because the royalties all fall within a certain window anyway.
SHERER:?Exactly? the order of magnitude is probably pretty accurate. And again, we only had 69 institutions that reported and participated in that question, as compared to the -? I?m trying to remember how many we had total; probably around 190 respondents. So, you know, the number is going to be much bigger than that if we can get more people to respond to that question.

Fontella Bass, whose voice soared in the 1965 hit "Rescue Me," died Wednesday at 72, her family said in a statement.?
"She was surrounded by her children and grandchildren when she was called home," the family said, thanking the singer's famiy, friends and fans for their support.
St. Louis TV station KSDK reports that Bass died of a heart attack.
Bass came from a musical family. Her mother was gospel great Martha Bass, and her brother was R&B and gospel singer David Peaston, who died in February.
"Rescue Me" topped the R&B charts for a month in 1965, reached No.4 on the pop charts, and sold over a million copies. Yet Bass' name was never as famous as that of the tune, as many assumed the song was sung by Aretha Franklin instead. The very first line in Bass' entry in the online AllMusic encyclopedia reads, "The 1965 classic "Rescue Me" is widely regarded as the greatest record Aretha Franklin never made."

Her other hits included "Don't Mess With a Good Thing" and "You'll Miss Me (When I'm Gone)," both with Bobby McClure.
Wrote one fan on the YouTube video for "Rescue Me": "Fontella Bass was one of the greatest soul / rhythm? & blues vocalists of the 60's & 70's. Her voice to this day all these decades later still chills my skin each time I hear her singing. she was one of my generation's most recognized yet often mistaken singers. Rest well, goddess of soul & blues, you'll be deeply missed & remembered always darling."
In 1993, she won a lawsuit against American Express for their use of "Rescue Me" in a 1990 commercial.
She is survived by four children.

We just had our first substantial snow here in the Midwest. The girls have waited months for this snow. There is just something magical about snow; to adults and children alike.
We all had high hopes that we would have a white Christmas but it wasn?t meant to be. We did receive a small blizzard the day after and have been living in a winter wonderland ever since.
The girls couldn?t wait to put on their snow gear and frolic in the wintery wonderland. Me, I grew up outside of Chicago and I have a lifetime of memories of freezing in the cold winter snow, sledding, building snowmen and trying to knock down my nemesis? snow fort to last me a lifetime. As much as I now hate the cold, I want all those memories for my girls and so I doubled up my layers, dug out my snow boots ( because no Midwestern girl worth her salt doesn?t have snow boots) bundled up my kids and my husband and we walked in the 22 degree weather to the neighborhood park; Rocket park. You can imagine what we went there for?
It?s called Rocket Park because there is a huge hill with a path on it, during the summer the kids use it to ride their bikes down. As a parent, it scares the hell out of me because visions of my girls? going down the steep at hill at warp speed sends terror through my mommy heart. But during the winter, the path is compacted and iced and children from all over the addition walk to the park with their toboggans and sleds in hand and one by one they fly down the hill; squealing with delight until they come to a full stop. Then they walk back up the steep hill and repeat the process for hours or until they lose feeling in their toes, whichever comes first.
That?s what we did yesterday.
My 7-year-old made the trek to the top of the hill with her father but once there and looking down, decided perhaps Rocket hill was something she would graduate to at a later date.
The Big Guy, however, was chomping at the bit to slide down the hill. It was only the fact that there were so many children waiting patiently in line that he decided against it. I suspect that one morning I will find him at Rocket Park sliding joyfully down the steep hill by himself while all the neighborhood children are at school.
The girls opted for a somewhat smaller but equally as steep hill on the golf course and they loved that they didn?t have to share it with anyone else, except their daddy. An hour later; 27 snow angels, a couple head-over-heel wipeouts, a few unsolicited failed snowball fight attempts and a lifetime of memories later we headed back home with rosy cheeks and runny noses. But the girls wanted more, as little people are known for doing every thing in excess especially coming off the Christmas of excess high. They did not want the magic to end.
I told them that we will save more for tomorrow because you can?t accumulate a lifetime of memories in a single day. We have a lifetime together to make memories with them, and their children and their children?s children. I hope.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) ? Rex Ryan stepped to the podium, looked out at the cameras and opened his news conference with a warning.
"You're not going to believe this one," the New York Jets coach declared without any hint of a smile.
In what has been a bizarre season, the Jets' wacky quarterback situation took yet another twist. Greg McElroy has a concussion ? which he didn't reveal until Thursday ? and will be replaced by Mark Sanchez as the starting quarterback in the season finale at Buffalo on Sunday.
"We've come to find out that Greg wasn't exactly truthful with our training staff after the game," said Ryan, who acknowledged he was "stunned" to hear the news. "He never disclosed that he had symptoms after the game to our trainers. Right now, he's being evaluated for a concussion."
McElroy, preparing to make his second NFL start in place of the benched Sanchez, was lifting weights Thursday morning and started experiencing headaches, Ryan said. McElroy went to the team's training staff and then revealed he was suffering concussion-like symptoms after being sacked 11 times in the Jets' 27-17 loss to San Diego last Sunday.
McElroy and head trainer John Mellody then went to Ryan to tell the coach the news. Offensive coordinator Tony Sparano said he was "pretty silent" when he found out a few minutes after Ryan.
"It's another bump in the road here," Sparano said, "and it's something we've become a little accustomed to dealing with."
Ryan was not certain exactly when McElroy suffered the concussion, but said there was no way he would play McElroy against the Bills and the third-stringer will "definitely be out." McElroy had been listed on the injury report Wednesday with a mild abdominal strain, but was a full participant in practice and was expected to play without any issues.
"I admire his courage and everything else, but you have to be truthful and I think that's the lesson learned here with the medical staff," said Ryan, who spoke to the entire team about concussions after practice. "The fact he really wanted to play, I understand the competitive side of Greg and all that, but the most important thing is the health of the players.
"Obviously, I feel fortunate that something like this showed up without him going out there and putting himself in harm's way."
While Sanchez wouldn't comment on whether players choosing to play through head injuries is common in the NFL, Tebow acknowledged that it probably does happen around the league because of job security.
"You fight hard to earn something and you don't want to jeopardize that with an injury, for sure," said Tebow, who added that he has never been in McElroy's situation. "I think that's definitely something guys will think about."
Ryan chose to start Sanchez over Tim Tebow because the team has just two practices and a walkthrough to prepare before the game. He also cited Sanchez's success against the Bills in the season opener, when he threw three touchdown passes in the Jets' 48-28 win.
Sanchez appeared to be on his way to a solid season, but it ended up being his best game. He was benched for the first time in his four-year career after turning over the ball five times at Tennessee on Dec. 17.
"I'm excited to play, obviously," Sanchez said. "You just never want to see something like that happen to a teammate, somebody I really respect. You feel for Greg and I'll be ready to play."
Sanchez was a bit surprised when Ryan told him he'd be starting because he thought McElroy just wasn't feeling well.
"I guess I didn't expect it," Sanchez said. "I wasn't coming into today thinking he had a concussion. I never would've known."
McElroy leapfrogged Tebow on the depth chart to start against the Chargers. After finding out about McElroy's condition, Ryan spoke with both Sanchez and Tebow to tell them of his decision.
"Obviously, Tim's not happy with that, as you'd expect," Ryan said.
The news came on the heels of some tension between Ryan and Tebow last week, when the popular backup quarterback told the coach he was "disappointed" at not getting the start and wanted to play "regular quarterback." ESPN New York first reported Sunday that Tebow asked out of the wildcat, and a person with knowledge of the situation confirmed that to The Associated Press. The two met again last Friday to clear the air, and Tebow reiterated that he was willing to do anything the team asked him to do.
Tebow insisted Wednesday that he did not refuse to do anything and acknowledged that Ryan might have misinterpreted what he said. Ryan said he understands that Tebow is frustrated at the situation and by not starting, but again would not disclose anything said between the two in their conversations last week.
Tebow said he didn't think Ryan's choice to play Sanchez was in any way punitive, and added that he and the coach have a "great" relationship.
"When you're a competitor, you want to play," Tebow said. "But I understood his decision and I just let him know, just like always, that I'll do whatever I can to help the team."
Tebow will be the No. 2 quarterback on Sunday at Buffalo, and could play ? but it won't be as the starter.
"Obviously, he'd like a shot at it," Ryan said, "but with the situation the way it is, it's a short window, really, to get the preparation time in and I just think it's best for our football team."
With the way the season has played out, from the quarterback controversies to the injuries suffered by key players, Ryan was asked if this is the strangest year he has ever experienced in the NFL.
"Yeah, I would say that's pretty accurate," Ryan said, laughing. "And, we've had some strange ones."
Added Tebow, chuckling: "It's been interesting."

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) ? The death toll from a powerful winter storm that pushed through the nation's midsection into the Northeast has risen to 9.
Officials in Indiana say a man and a woman were killed when the scooter they were riding went out of control on a snowy Evansville street Wednesday and they were hit by a pickup truck.
The storm is expected to drop one to two feet of snow on parts of the Northeast, a day after it dumped a record snowfall in Arkansas and ruined holiday travel plans around the region.
The National Weather Service says the Northeast's heaviest accumulations will be in northern Pennsylvania, upstate New York and inland sections of several New England states.
In coastal areas, the storm is mostly bringing high winds and heavy rain.
Despite the wet weather, no flights are delayed Thursday morning cities like New York, Philadelphia and Boston.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The U.S. Treasury Department will begin taking steps to delay hitting the government's $16.4 trillion borrowing limit on Dec. 31.
Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said in a letter Wednesday to congressional leaders that the department will use accounting measures to save approximately $200 billion, which could keep the government from reaching the limit for about two months.
The move comes as President Barack Obama and the GOP congressional leadership are locked in negotiations over how to avoid a series of tax increases and spending cuts, known as the "fiscal cliff," that are scheduled to take effect in the new year.
Obama has sought to include an increase in the borrowing limit in the talks. But Speaker John Boehner and other Republican leaders have demanded concessions in return. The negotiations hit a stalemate last week. Obama and lawmakers are returning to Washington this week to resume talks.
Geithner says the negotiations over tax and spending policies make it difficult to predict how long he can delay reaching the borrowing limit.
The borrowing limit is the amount of debt the government can pile up. The government accumulates debt two ways: It borrows money from investors by issuing Treasury bonds, and it borrows from itself, mostly from Social Security revenue.
In 2011, Congress raised the limit to nearly $16.4 trillion from $14.3 trillion. Three decades ago, the national debt was $908 billion. But Washington spent more than it took in, and the debt rose steadily ? surpassing $1 trillion in 1982, then $5 trillion in 1996. It reached $10 trillion in 2008 as the financial crisis and recession dried up tax revenue and as the government spent more on unemployment benefits and other programs.
In August 2011, the rating agency Standard & Poor's stunned the world by stripping the U.S. government of its prized AAA bond rating because it feared that America's dysfunctional political system couldn't deliver credible plans to reduce the federal government's debt. S&P decried American "political brinksmanship" and concluded that "the differences between political parties have proven to be extraordinarily difficult to bridge."
A year and a half later, the two political parties are still as deadlocked as ever.
Despite S&P's warnings and the political stalemate, investors still want U.S. Treasurys. Given economic turmoil in Europe and uncertainty elsewhere, U.S. government debt and U.S. dollars look like the safest bet around.
That is why the interest rate, or yield, on 10-year Treasury notes has fallen from 2.58 Aug. 5, 2011 to 1.75 percent Wednesday.

In my last relationship I loved going away without the boyfriend. Travelling for work treated me to a few nights away with no drama and when I visited my family I never pushed the Ex into coming and was slightly relieved whenever he said he couldn?t come.
I figured this was fairly normal, I needed time to myself and I don?t think there?s anything wrong with that. Surprise surprise that 
relationship ended.
Since being with the Pool Boy I?ve only spent one or two nights away from him for girls trips to Sydney. Any other trips and try to make sure he can come and holidays to family are planned with him very much in mind and when he can?t come I?m not relieved in the slightest.
While talking to the Pool Boy over the phone we had this realisation that we actually really like each other. His brother was in a two year relationship and always talked about how much he loved it when he went away or she went away. They seemed to love each other but I?m not sure if they really liked each other.
Am I making sense? Probably not.
This may seem silly that at 25 I?ve only just had this realisation, that a relationship should contain a heavy dose of friendship in there, something that I?ve never really thought about till now.
My Ex is someone I?d never be friends with, something easier said now than 3 years ago.
The Pool Boy is someone I can easily see myself being friends with and being away from him affirms that. He?s the person I go to first to share what?s been happening and love debriefing with him at the end of the day.
I know this doesn?t apply to everyone, people want different things out of a partner. But there?s certainly something to this friendship side of it.

Dear Prudence,
I'm a 23-year-old professional woman living with a close friend. A few months ago, we were out with a big group and everyone was drinking. My roommate was very drunk and ended up having sex with a guy I work with who was also extremely drunk. The next day, they woke up together, but neither of them remembered how they ended up there. She was very upset because she didn't remember consenting to sex. I believe they were both too intoxicated to consent, but I also don't think that he took advantage of her. Since then he and I have become good friends. Recently, I mentioned to my roommate that he?ll be at an upcoming party. She freaked out, forbade me from saying his name, and went on a tirade about how she couldn?t go and that I shouldn't either. I don?t blame her for being upset, but I don't think it's fair to blame him. He and his roommate overlap many of our social circles, so she?s definitely going to run into him. I think that she should go to therapy, to try and work through what happened to her. But I'm not sure how to say that, or if it's even appropriate. Please help!

I know a case can be made that because your friend was intoxicated she was unable to give consent, therefore she was raped. Some will argue she should pursue this case legally. But if the story is as you say?two young people voluntarily had too much to drink and were too much in the bag to make a rational decision about how to consummate the evening?I think seeing herself as a victim would keep your friend psychologically stuck, and turning the guy over to the police would have the potential to unnecessarily ruin his life. Imagine watching a remake of Knocked Up in which the Seth Rogen character ends up on the sex offender registry. Your friend's unfortunate one-night stand should help her realize she needs to learn the difference between taking the edge off and ending up in a walking blackout, and how to stay on the right side of that line. I think your friend needs to see a therapist, not to explore the wrong that was done to her, but to help her process this regretted evening and get her to the point where she can comfortably be in this guy?s presence. You should say that as her friend you?ve become concerned that she hasn?t gotten past this event and that it?s affecting her enjoyment of life. Tell her that you think some focused therapy will help her regain her composure and confidence.

I have a dear friend who has two children the same age my as mine. Our older children never clicked, but our younger ones are best buddies. My friend's older child, a 13-year-old, has some behavioral issues. The child is very bright, but has a terrible temper and says awful things to my friend and the younger sibling, some of which I've heard. He?s broken things and made threatening comments. My friend is getting him help (therapy, medication, etc.), but I?m concerned about allowing my younger one to play over there. Frankly, I'm afraid of what the older child might say or do and he scares me. My friend has mentioned having my younger one for a sleepover on a few occasions, but I'm not comfortable. Should I just keep inviting hers to play at our home? My friend knows something's up, but neither one of us has addressed it. I know it?s difficult dealing with a child with these issues, and I don't want to add to her stress or risk damaging our friendship.

In light of the horror of Newtown, many more people are going to be looking warily at hostile, troubled kids. It?s really important to keep in mind that very few of these children are truly threatening. They cause agony for themselves and their families, but they rarely become violent. Your friend has been dealing with a heartbreaking situation for years and deserves your kindness and support. But as close as you are, apparently she has not confided in you about her concerns over her older child, so I think you should follow her lead. You have to trust your instincts. Her 13-year-old has made disturbing comments and you just aren?t comfortable leaving your younger child around him. That?s fair enough. So you just need to keep countering her sleepover offers by saying you?d rather host. If she asks you point blank what?s up, say that you know she is doing everything possible to help her older one deal with his temper, but for now you think it?s easier to let the little ones play at your house. Tell her how much you admire how she?s handled this difficult situation. Let?s hope all these kids, and their families, find more resources to get the help they need.

I'm a cute-enough, slim-figured marathoner and academic who will be turning 35 in January. Before I reach my birthday, as is the case every year, I will have figured out a socially acceptable way to spend New Year's. But as of late, I?ve had an unexpectedly acute onset of night sobbing, loss of sleep, and have been isolating myself from discussions that involve weddings or kids. I feel like I need to get used to the idea that I might not ever have children or a companion. Although I'd like to find someone, I've lost interest in being set up by friends and getting gussied up to go out. I've done 15 years of it. This impending birthday has me stuck and terrorized. Every solution I come up with just makes me feel more isolated. Help.
