Keenly Followed Online Social Rating Community Thenumber1.com Throws Lights on Common Man's Opinion Pertaining to World Politics

Thenumber1.com, a popular social rating website, is quickly emerging as preferred platform for common people to express their independent stand about the most critical issues of world politics. This website has been introducing interesting social rating competitions covering a wide array of topics, since the launch of the website few months ago.

(PRWEB) November 30, 2012

After making an impact on its members with numerous fun filled social rating competitions, Thenumber1.com has just come up with a more serious competition on the hottest issues of world politics. This social rating website was created just a couple of months ago, and is already a popular online destination for the younger generation of internet users. It may be recalled that some of the competitions like top villain looks, rate my moustache, rate my cloth, etc. has received tremendous applause from the members of the website. With the introduction of the new competition on the hottest issues of world politics, many members are now using this community to express their opinion on these issues.

According to the new competition in Thenumber1.com, the most relevant issues of world politics includes NATO withdrawal from Afghanistan, Independence of Kashmir, US pullout from Iraq, Israel's attack on Gaza, etc. Amongst all these, the topic of NATO's withdrawal from Afghanistan has sparked a lot of interest amongst the members of the program. One may recall that NATO forces have been deployed throughout Afghanistan since the 9/11 terror attacks. Apart from allowing members to post their opinion on this debated political issue, Thenumber1.com has also published a brief post describing reasons for and against the withdrawal of NATO forces from Afghanistan.

Thenumber1.com's increasing popularity as a social rating website can be attributed to several features that are not available in most other similar websites. Social sharing, aggregate rating scheme, a comprehensive data model, and an advanced Graphical User Interface are the top factors that make this website the favorite online destination of thousands off people across the globe. When asked about the latest competition in their website, a senior official from Thenumber1.com said, "It is never easy for a common man to express his/her independent opinion on these political issues. That's the exact reason behind creating this competition".

Sleep Deprivation Effects: Even Your Fat Cells ... - Women's Health

Not getting enough sleep can make you groggy, but can it also make you fat? Researchers at the University of Chicago think it's a strong possibility.

In a new study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, researchers determined that four nights of sleep deprivation reduced insulin sensitivity in fat cells by a whopping 30 percent. And the less sensitive your cells are to insulin, the less your body produces the hunger-regulating hormone leptin.

"This is one of the first studies to show that a cell outside of the brain?the fat cell?also needs sleep," says study author Matthew Brady, Ph.D., vice-chair of the Committee on Molecular Metabolism and Nutrition at the University of Chicago.

Brady and a team of researchers put seven young, healthy subjects through two study conditions: First, they spent 8.5 hours in bed for four nights in a row (participants slept for roughly 8 hours each night, the ideal length). One month later, they spent 4.5 hours in bed for four nights. Previous research has shown that getting only 4 hours of sleep negatively affects metabolism. After the fourth night, the subjects took a glucose tolerance test and had fat cells biopsied. And, yes, food intake was controlled and identical.

How Sleep Affects Fat The authors found that sleep deprivation made fat cells less sensitive to insulin, a hormone that cells use to take in glucose for energy. Brady explains that insulin-stimulated glucose uptake is proportional to the secretion of leptin, a hormone made in the fat cell that regulates hunger.? The less sensitive cells are to insulin, the less leptin they produce, and the hungrier you are. And the magnitude of the decrease in this case was very surprising.

"A 30 percent reduction in insulin sensitivity is equivalent to metabolically aging the subjects 10-20 years just from four nights of four and a half hours of sleep," Brady says.

"It's not that we took someone who was on the tipping point of developing metabolic disease and just pushed them over the edge. These were very young, healthy subjects."

Brady says the findings are important because they suggest that sleep could be a treatment for obesity. To that end, his next study will consist of trying to improve the sleep of overweight or obese subjects who have obstructive sleep apnea to see if sleep quality has any effect on insulin sensitivity and metabolism. He's excited about the possible impact such a study might have: "It's hard to get people to diet and exercise but if you could show that improving your sleep quality and duration has a positive benefit, that may be an easier therapeutic intervention for people to undertake."

Ways to Get Better Sleep
While this study still leaves some questions unanswered?namely, if sleeping, say, 6 hours is bad or if "catching up" on sleep over the weekend can reverse the effects?it's clear that getting enough sleep is important for both your mind AND your body. Here are five ways you can improve your sleep now.

1. Make a Bedtime Routine
Pick an hour for shutting down every night and stick to it?on weekends, too. A regular bedtime and waking time will help you fall asleep.

2. Power Down
Checking your cell before bed amps up brain activity, making it harder to doze off. Plus, the blue light emitted from gadgets can suppress the sleep hormone melatonin. At least an hour before bedtime, turn off your TV and computer and don't use your phone.

3. Chill Out
A cooler body makes it easier to fall asleep. Exaggerate that feeling with a toasty, pre-bed bath or shower. Lower your thermostat a bit, then pile on the blankets?you'll save money on your heat while you're at it.

4. Sip Wisely
No caffeine after sundown and no booze before bed. While drinking alcohol may help you fall asleep faster, you could wake up in the middle of the night. Enjoy a cup of decaf or herbal tea instead.

5. Drown Out Noise
Sleep with a fan on or invest in a sound machine that can produce white noise to block the racket of the outside world.

World stocks up on hopes for a US budget deal

BANGKOK (AP) ? Signs that U.S. political leaders may be closing in on a budget deal to avoid the so-called "fiscal cliff" boosted world stock markets Thursday.

Comments by President Barack Obama and Speaker of the House John Boehner that a deal to avoid a budget crisis could be reached before year's end was enough to boost markets in the face of disappointing U.S. home sales, a critical indicator of whether the economy is improving.

European stock markets opened higher. Britain's FTSE 100 rose 0.4 percent to 5,826.96. Germany's DAX advanced 0.5 percent to 7,382.93. France's CAC-40 added 0.7 percent to 3,538.65.

Wall Street also appeared headed for a session of gains. Dow Jones industrial futures rose 0.6 percent to 13,030. S&P 500 futures were up 0.6 percent at 1,416.10.

Earlier, Japan's Nikkei 225 index rose 1 percent to close at 9,400.88. Hong Kong's Hang Seng jumped 1 percent to 21,922.89 and South Korea's Kospi added 1.2 percent to 1,934.85. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 gained 0.7 percent to 4,477.70. Benchmarks in Singapore, Taiwan and New Zealand also rose.

But mainland Chinese stocks extended their slump to a fourth day. The Shanghai Composite Index lost 0.5 percent to 1,963.49, the lowest closing since Jan. 16, 2009. The smaller Shenzhen Composite Index lost 1 percent 743.43.

"Investors are getting more and more pessimistic towards the market after recent losses," said Peng Yunliang, a Shanghai-based analyst.

Obama and the U.S. Congress have until Jan. 1 to agree on how to trim the country's unwieldy deficit. Otherwise, a series of automatic tax increases and sharp spending cuts will take effect that could drag the world's No. 1 economy into recession. Obama said Wednesday he believes a "framework" for an agreement can be reached before Christmas.

"It's really a headline market at the moment. We'll probably continue to see headlines on the fiscal cliff supersede any economic data until it is resolved," said Stan Shamu of IG Markets in Melbourne. "The longer it stretches out, the more risk there is that it will cause further volatility in the markets. But for now, it seems markets are on the right track."

Among Japanese stocks, Nakayama Steel Works soared 55 percent after a Nikkei business daily reported the company will seek restructuring and loan waivers from banks. Kobe Steel gained 6.9 percent. Export-dependent shares also rose, including Yamaha Motor Co., up 3.6 percent; and Honda Motor Co., up 2 percent.

Hong Kong-listed property shares also posted solid gains, including Evergrande Real Estate Group, which jumped 6.6 percent.

Concern that the U.S. will go over the fiscal "cliff" has weighed on stocks since the Nov. 6 elections returned a divided government to power, with Obama staying in the White House and Republicans retaining control of the House of Representatives.

U.S. sales of new homes fell slightly in October, down 0.3 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 368,000. The government also said Tuesday that September sales were slower than initially reported.

In Europe, sentiment improved this week after Greece's bailout creditors agreed to pay its next installment of loans and outlined a series of measures to lower its debt load over the coming decade. Concerns remain, however, over the country's economy, which is expected to enter a sixth year of recession in 2013.

Benchmark oil for January delivery was up 44 cents to $86.95 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 69 cents to close at $86.49 per barrel on the Nymex on Wednesday.

In currencies, the euro rose to $1.2976 from $1.2932 late Wednesday in New York. The dollar rose to 82.15 yen from 81.90 yen.

Car bombs kill 34 in Syria suburb

Hopd / AP

In this photo released by the Syrian official news agency SANA, a Syrian soldier, right, and citizens gather at an alley that was destroyed by two cars bombs, at Jaramana neighborhood, in the suburb of Damascus, Syria, Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012.

By Reuters

Two car bombs killed at least 34 people in a district of Damascus loyal to President Bashar Assad on Wednesday in the deadliest attack on the Syrian capital in months.

The explosions struck the eastern neighborhood of Jaramana, home to many of Syria's Druze minority as well as Christians who have fled violence elsewhere, ripping through shops and bringing debris crashing down on cars.

Once a bastion of security in Assad's 20-month campaign to crush an uprising against his rule, Damascus has been hit with increasing regularity as the rebels grow bolder.

State media said a bomb also detonated in the southern town of Bosra al-Sham, near Deraa, where the revolt began with peaceful street protests in March 2011. It also said eight "terrorists" were killed near Damascus while they tried to booby-trap a car with a bomb.

Syrians risk lives in battle to protect nation's ancient sites

Authorities severely limit independent media in Syria and it was not immediately possible to verify reports. The government said 34 people were killed in Damascus but did not give a casualty count for the Bosra al-Sham bombing.

The attacks followed two weeks of military gains by rebels who have stormed and taken army bases across Syria, exposing Assad's loss of control in northern and eastern regions despite the devastating air power which he has used to bombard opposition strongholds.

A resident of Jaramana said that rebels had been repeatedly forbidden by local Druze elders to operate in the district, which borders the capital's center where government offices are located.

"Tension have risen between Druze elders and rebels and now there are 3 or 4 small explosions a week," she told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

'Emergency red list' targets Syria's looted treasures

Underlining the growing military muscle of the rebels, bolstered by weapons captured during raids on army facilities as well as supplies from abroad, fighters shot down a war plane in northern Syria on Wednesday using an anti-aircraft missile, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Opposition groups subsequently posted a video clip on the Internet that showed a man in a green jumpsuit being carried through fields. He was bleeding heavily from his head and appeared unconscious. "This is the pilot that attacked the houses of civilians," said a voice off camera.

Another video showed doctors treating the limp body of apparently the same pilot, who activists said ejected from his MiG 23 fighter jet before it crashed near Darat Ezza, about 20 miles from Aleppo.

More Syria coverage from NBC News

The bloodshed came as Syria's new opposition coalition held its first full meeting on Wednesday to discuss forming a transitional government crucial to win effective Arab and Western support for the revolt against Assad.

"The objective is to name the prime minister for a transitional government, or at least have a list of candidates," said Suhair al-Atassi, one of the coalition's two vice-presidents.

Osman Orsal / Reuters

A look back at the violence that has overtaken the country

The two-day meeting in Cairo will also select committees to manage aid and communications, a process that is becoming a power struggle between the Muslim Brotherhood and secular members.

Rivalries have also intensified between the opposition in exile and rebels on the ground in Syria, where the death toll has reached 40,000, including soldiers, civilians and rebels.

'Terrorist' bombs
The Syrian state news agency, SANA, described Wednesday's blasts as "terrorist bombings", a label it reserves for attacks by mainly Sunni Muslim fighters battling to overthrow Assad, a member of Syria's Alawite minority linked to Shi'ite Islam.

Two smaller bombs also exploded in Jaramana at about the same time as the car bombs, around 7 a.m. In total at least 47 people were killed, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, giving a higher toll than the government. Eighty three people were seriously wounded, the British-based Observatory said.

"Who benefits from this? Tell me who benefits from this? America, Israel, Qatar?" a man at the bomb site said to Syrian television, which broadcast footage of firefighters hosing down the blackened hulks of two vehicles and several cars crushed by debris from neighboring buildings.

Pools of blood could be seen on the road.

Most foreign powers have condemned Assad. Britain, France and Gulf countries have recognized the umbrella opposition group meeting in Cairo, the Syrian National Coalition, as the sole representative of the Syrian people.

But Assad has been able to rely on his allies, especially regional powerhouse Iran, which is believed to be bank-rolling him and supplying military support despite U.S. and European sanctions. Russia, Syria's main arms supplier, says it has only sent weapons already agreed to in previous deals.

International Syria mediator Lakhdar Brahimi is due to brief the 15-member council on Thursday and the U.N. General Assembly on Friday. There is diplomatic deadlock between Western powers, who broadly support the opposition and Assad's supporters Russia and China which have blocked Security Council action.

Camera trap photo of rare cat wins prize

ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2012) ? A photograph taken by Wildlife Conservation Society scientists of a little known Bolivian cat species called an oncilla has won a BBC Wildlife camera-trap photo competition.

The photo, which won the New Discoveries category, documents the first-known occurrence of this extremely rare spotted cat in Madidi National Park.

The Oncilla (Leopardus tigrinus) occurs across the Amazon and along the tropical Andes. About the size of a house cat, they are the smallest cat species of South America's lowlands. Very little is known about their life history.

WCS researchers Guido Ayala, Maria Viscarra, and Robert Wallace submitted the photo taken last July during camera trap surveys of jaguars and other wildlife living in Madidi -- considered to be among the most biodiverse protected areas on the planet.

More than 1,300 entries were submitted from around the world. The winning entry received ?1,000 (approximately $1,500), courtesy of Paramo Directional Clothing Systems and the World Land Trust.

The new record for oncilla in Madidi pushes the number of confirmed cat species in the park to six with at least two more waiting to be confirmed. Madidi National Park contains 11 percent of the world's birds, more than 200 species of mammals, almost 300 types of fish, and 12,000 plant varieties. The 19,000 square-kilometer (7,335 square mile) park is known for its array of altitudinal gradients and habitats from lowland tropical forests of the Amazon to snow-capped peaks of the High Andes.

The Greater Madidi-Tambopata Landscape Conservation Program aims to develop local capacity to conserve the landscape and mitigate a variety of threats, including road construction, logging, and agricultural expansion.

WCS's work in the Madidi-Tambopata Landscape has been made possible by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the blue moon fund, the Beneficia Foundation, the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund, and other generous supporters.

The Wildlife Conservation Society saves wildlife and wild places worldwide. We do so through science, global conservation, education and the management of the world's largest system of urban wildlife parks, led by the flagship Bronx Zoo. Together these activities change attitudes towards nature and help people imagine wildlife and humans living in harmony. WCS is committed to this mission because it is essential to the integrity of life on Earth.

The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, established in 2000, seeks to advance environmental conservation, patient care and scientific research. The goal of the Foundation's Andes-Amazon Initiative is to maintain the climatic function and biodiversity of the Amazon Basin by promoting forest conservation and addressing the drivers of deforestation and forest degradation.

After years forswearing year-end celebrations because of belt tightening, more companies are feeling festive enough to host holiday gatherings, according to several recent surveys.

Close to 83 percent of 100 human resources managers said their companies will host an event this year, including 10 percent who didn?t have a party last year because of the economy, according to preliminary results from the annual Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc., holiday party survey.

Don?t expect an extravaganza. Few companies are going back to the champagne and caviar affairs common before the recession.

Instead, they?re opting for more modest or original activities -- a potluck lunch, after-hours party at the office, or volunteering at a food bank followed by dinner at a local restaurant. ?There appears to be a move from the more traditional night out, with dinner and a dance band,? says Robert Hosking, executive director at Robert Half International?s OfficeTeam division, which conducts an annual office party survey. ?I think companies are becoming more creative with this, and allowing employees to come back with recommendations.?

Most people like holiday parties. At companies that hold parties, 79 percent of managers and 75 percent of employees say they enjoy them, according to OfficeTeam?s 2012 office holiday party survey.

But even if office parties turn you into Mr. Grinch, you can?t afford to skip them, says business etiquette expert Barbara Pachter. ?Think of it as a business opportunity,? she says, ?because the people you meet may be interviewing you in three or six months? for a new position or promotion.

If your company is throwing some kind of shindig this season, here?s the experts? advice for making the most of it:

Don?t talk shop. Conversations about work are OK, in moderation. Parties are a chance to get to know co-workers on a different level. ??You can talk about what people are doing for the holidays, what vacations they have coming up,? movies, plays, or sports you or your kids play, Pachter says. ?Then you have a common bond.? Three things Pachter recommends steering clear of: sex, politics and religion. And as hard as it can be, don?t gossip about co-workers. If you get stuck, ?You can listen, but don?t contribute.?

Mingle. Move beyond your usual circle of co-workers and introduce yourself to people you might not run into otherwise. ?It?s a great place to network with more senior people who could influence your career,? Hosking says.?

Leave the thigh-high dress and ripped jeans at home. Think business casual. If you think something?s too suggestive or casual, it probably is, Pachter says.

Look like you?re having fun, even if you?re not. Body language can reveal a lot about a person?s attitude. You might be there under duress, but you don?t need to show it. Frowning, crossing your arms or sitting at the table texting will?broadcast how much fun you?re not having, Pachter says. To boost your confidence talking to higher ups, practice a few ?power poses? before you go, suggests career coach Susan Joyce, in this blog post.

Don?t get plowed. If you?re not a party person, it?s easy to drink too much to make yourself feel more comfortable. Don?t.? A participant in one of the etiquette seminars Pachter teaches shared the story of a young man who got drunk at his company Christmas party, told off his boss and got fired on the spot. ?The next day he couldn?t understand why his badge didn?t work,? she says. If you do over-imbibe, accept any morning-after ribbing. ?It usually blows over,? Pachter says, ?but if you get defensive, they?ve found your vulnerability and it?ll tend to stick around.?

Take pictures, but ask before posting anything online. Despite years of warnings about the damage people can do to themselves and their friends by posting pictures of potentially compromising situations on Facebook or elsewhere, it still happens all the time, Pachter says. Always ask.

Brief your spouse. If you?re bringing a significant other, give them the 411 in advance on co-workers you work with that they should know.

Don?t cut out early. If it?s a dinner, stay through dessert. If there?s dancing, stick around for at least one song.? ?If everyone in your department is staying, you should stay awhile too,? Pachter says.

54.5 MPG and Beyond: Fueling Energy-Efficient Vehicles

For many, refueling their vehicle can be disappointing. It?s the only activity where consumers watch the cost add up, dollar by dollar, quickly eating up disposable income. And much of that money goes right out the tail pipe -- only 14-26 percent of the energy from fuel is used to move a vehicle down the road.

Fortunately, the Obama Administration?s new national fuel economy standards for passenger vehicles will improve vehicle efficiency and save Americans money at the pump, all while reducing our dependence on foreign oil and growing the U.S. economy.

Finalized in August, the new standards build on the Obama Administration?s first set of fuel economy increases -- the first increase since 1985 -- that raised the average fuel economy of passenger vehicles to 35.5 miles per gallon by 2016. Under the new rules, cars and light-duty trucks built for model years 2017-2025 are expected to achieve industry-average fuel efficiency equivalents of 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025 -- nearly double the efficiency of cars on the road today.

These changes in vehicle efficiency will directly benefit consumers. By 2025 Americans can expect to save an estimated $8,200 in fuel costs over the lifetime of a new vehicle -- or almost four years worth of gasoline costs for the average household. The standards will also help clean the air we breathe, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by more than 65 percent compared to cars in 2016 and cutting other pollutants that cause soot and smog.

While the standards are based on an industry average fuel economy goal, a manufacturer?s individual requirements depend on the vehicles it produces. This helps preserve consumer choice, meaning Americans can still buy the vehicle that best fits their needs. Consumers don?t have to wait until 2025 to start saving. They are already seeing more efficient vehicles in the showrooms as a result of President Obama?s first round of fuel economy standards, and consumers are responding positively. The average fuel economy of new cars sold in October reached an all-time high of 24.1 miles per gallon, according to the University of Michigan?s Transportation Research Institute.

Improving light-duty vehicle fuel economy is also one of the fastest ways to reduce our dependence on foreign oil, helping to build an American economy to last. The program will save an estimated 12.2 billion barrels of oil, and by 2025 the standards will cut oil consumption by an estimated 2.2 million barrels a day. The fuel economy program alone with get us more than halfway to President Obama?s goal of cutting oil imports by a third by 2025.

Currently there is a wide range of technologies available to help automakers meet the standards, but achieving these historic goals will also require innovative new technologies and manufacturing. This innovation will spur economic growth and create high-quality domestic jobs. Employing 700,000 Americans, the auto industry is the lifeblood of U.S. manufacturing, and the Environmental Protection Agency estimates the new fuel economy standards will create more than 148,000 jobs from 2017-2025.

At the Energy Department, we are working to promote the innovation required to meet the new fuel economy standards, while making America more competitive and creating the jobs of tomorrow here at home. We are investing in groundbreaking research that will result in cars that have more efficient engines, weigh less and drive further.

Over the next few weeks, we will be highlighting companies and the technologies they are developing -- with the help of the Energy Department -- to reduce vehicle fuel consumption. Be sure to check on Energy.gov to learn about the advancements that will get us to 54.5 mpg by 2025.?

Japan suspends dubious reconstruction projects

(AP) ? Japan's government has suspended 35 projects included in a budget for reconstruction from the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami after criticism the spending was not directly related to recovery from the disasters.

As much as a fourth of the 11.7 trillion yen ($148 billion) budget had been earmarked for unrelated projects, including subsidies for a contact lens factory in another region and research whaling.

However, the 35 projects put on hold during a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda involved spending of only 16.8 billion yen ($210 million).

No specific reason was given for each project, though Noda and other officials have vowed to cut spending not directly for reconstruction. Many of the projects in the budget were included on the pretext they might aid Japan's economic revival.

"Some of the projects are being deferred to 2013," Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura told reporters in a regular briefing. "But Prime Minister Noda said the spending really must be committed to reconstruction."

Among the projects put on hold was a plan to boost the Japan "brand" through lecture tours, money earmarked to pay for Cabinet-sponsored discussions on "social inclusiveness," and quake-resistance renovations for various government ministries.

Minutes from a committee meeting held last month showed Cabinet ministers concluding that while projects unrelated to the disaster were legal, it would be better to focus spending on the disaster zone.

The committee adopted new guidelines this week requiring that reconstruction funds be disbursed through a special government account devoted to programs in the disaster area, which includes much of Japan's northeastern coast.

A notice on the website of the Reconstruction Ministry said the Finance Ministry and other government agencies would work to "strictly rectify" the budget, and may suspend other projects.

The government decided to boost spending on reconstruction from the 19 trillion yen ($237.5 billion) meant to be spent by the end of March 2015.

Progress on reconstruction has been hindered by a lack of local government staff and other experts, disagreements over how and whether to rebuild some towns obliterated by the tsunami, and the sheer scale of the destruction.

A report issued Tuesday showed only 47 percent of planned projects had begun work. About 60 percent of the 9.6 million tons of tsunami debris has been cleared, but only 11 percent of it processed. Reconstruction of fisheries and fishing ports and rehabilitation of farmland has also lagged.

Defining the art of putting

(AP) ? Webb Simpson and Keegan Bradley, two of the major faces in the debate over belly putters, said Tuesday they would not fight a change in the rules if golf's governing bodies decide to outlaw putters anchored to the body.

That doesn't mean they're in favor of a ban.

"I'm obviously not happy with the ruling, but I respect the USGA, and especially Mike Davis," Bradley said. "They make the rules, and I'll adjust appropriately. But I'm going to accept the challenge and hopefully do well when they do ban it."

Davis, the USGA executive director, and Royal & Ancient chief executive Peter Dawson have scheduled a press conference Wednesday morning to announce their conclusions on the future of long putters. All indications point toward a ban on anchoring the club.

At issue is not the putter itself, but whether it can be anchored to the body, such as the stomach (belly putters) or the chest (long putters).

The long putters have been in vogue for the better part of 25 years, though a recent surge in use got the attention of golf's two governing bodies. Bradley became the first major champion with a belly putter when he won the PGA Championship last year. Simpson won the U.S. Open using a belly putter, and Ernie Els won the British Open with a belly putter, rallying to beat Adam Scott, who uses a long putter he anchors to the top of his chest.

Guan Tianling, the 14-year-old from China, used a belly putter to win the Asia-Pacific Amateur earlier this month to earn a spot in the Masters.

Dawson spoke in July about looking at the anchored putters as a rules issue instead of an equipment issue. If that's the case and it is banned, it would not take effect until 2016 because the Rules of Golf are only updated every four years.

While a change would affect players like the recent major champions, Carl Pettersson and Tim Clark, several others are opposed to putters stuck into the body. They argue it takes away nervous hands and allows for a smoother stroke.

Tiger Woods is opposed to long putters, and he stated his argument clearly on Tuesday.

"I just believe that the art of putting is swinging the club and controlling nerves, and having it as a fixed point ? as I was saying all year ? is something that's not in the traditions of the game," Woods said. "We swing all other 13 clubs. I think the putter should be the same. It should be a swinging motion throughout the entire bag."

Woods said his biggest concern was not so much the major champions, but junior players.

"There have been some guys who had had success out there, and obviously everyone always copies what we out here, and that's something that I think for the greater good of the game needs to be adjusted," he said.

Simpson first switched to a belly putter in 2004 to help with consistency. He found one in a pro shop, gave it a try and noticed immediate improvement. But for all the attention on belly putters, he said it was the accuracy with his driver that helped him win the U.S. Open at Olympic Club this year.

"My argument the whole time is to change something that drastic, it needs to be based off facts and not what certain people think the tradition of the game looks like," Simpson said. "But look, I'm not going to be one of those guys that says this is a terrible decision. I'm just saying to make a change this big, show me the facts. And hey, they're the governing body, so we'll see what happens."

Simpson already has been practicing with a conventional putter, preparing for such a ban. He said if there is a ban, he would use the conventional putter at home, and then in pro-am rounds and make the switch when he's comfortable with it.

"I'm just going to take it one step at a time until my comfort level gets better and better," Simpson said. "If I feel ready by Hyundai (the start of the 2013 season), I'll be putting with a short putter. And if I don't feel ready for two years, I'll wait."

Bradley said he would be in no rush to make the change if there is a ban.

Graeme McDowell and Ian Poulter were among those who lined up against anchored putters earlier this month in Australia. McDowell said the rule should have been changed years ago, and that using an anchored putter "takes one extraneous movement out of the putting stroke," which he feels is an advantage under pressure.

Poulter, as usual, was more blunt.

"Ban it. End of story," Poulter said.

Steve Stricker, regarded as one of the best putters in golf, has picked up a belly putter to see what the rage was all about. And it concerned him.

"It was pretty scary how fast I picked it up, to tell you the truth," Stricker said. "I went and anchored it just right below my sternum. It was a little different feel for me, but I got pretty consistent pretty quick with it. So I can see that there was an advantage, even though I can't see myself ever doing it."

Ill. man gets life term for killing wife, kids

JOLIET, Ill. (AP) ? A suburban Chicago man was sentenced to life in prison Tuesday for killing his wife and three school-age children as they sat buckled into the family's SUV ? allegedly so he could start a new life subsisting in the Canadian wilderness.

The sentencing of Christopher Vaughn, 37, came two months after jurors found him guilty of killing his 34-year-old wife, Kimberly, and their children on June 14, 2007. Each child was shot once in the chest and head.

The judge sentenced Vaughn to four consecutive life sentences with no possibility of parole. Vaughn did not make a statement in court.

Kimberly Vaughn's twin sister, Susan Ledbetter, poignantly described her pain, telling the court how she occasionally walks by a mirror and sees her sister's image and how she hears her sister's laughter whenever she laughs.

"I silently wonder if my parents and older sister experience pain in my presence because Kim and I share not only our looks but also many of our personality traits," she said, weeping as she read her impact statement to the court.

Vaughn, who lived with his family in a spacious Oswego home, faced a mandatory life term for the killings. But the hearing in Joliet gave relatives a chance to confront him and to convey how much pain he caused.

The 2007 murders started out as a death penalty case, slowing the pace to trial. But Illinois has since abolished capital punishment, making life in prison the maximum penalty.

"There isn't a punishment that fits this crime," Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow told reporters outside the courtroom after the sentencing.

"What this guy did here was a diabolical atrocity, and he's a heartless, soulless, psychopath," Glasgow said.

Vaughn murdered his family members, prosecutors say, because he saw them as obstacles to his dream of a new life in Canada. He posted wistful Internet messages about building a cabin and settling in the Yukon cut off from the world.

According to prosecutors, Vaughn woke his family on the day of the killings promising a surprise trip to a water park. But shortly after 5 a.m., he pulled off the road, shot his wife, then killed 12-year-old Abigayle, 11-year-old Cassandra and Blake, 8.

Abigayle was found holding a stuffed animal; Blake's wounds indicated he had raised his arm to shield himself.

At trial, defense attorneys told jurors that Vaughn's wife was to blame, saying she was suicidal over marital strife. They suggested she shot her husband in the wrist and leg, then killed the children and herself.

Prosecutors balked at that theory, asking jurors whether it seems reasonable that a woman who disliked guns could have shot her husband twice, only grazing him each time, but fatally shot each of her children with a marksman's precision.

They said Vaughn shot himself to make it look like his wife carried out the attack. Prosecutors said Vaughn showed little emotion after the shootings and was more interested in his damaged clothing than the fate of his family.

Chavez's return to Cuba for treatment rattles Venezuela

CARACAS/HAVANA (Reuters) - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez flew into Cuba on Wednesday for cancer-linked medical treatment that revived questions about the viability of his socialist rule and left Venezuelans again guessing about his exact condition.

After weeks of scarce public appearances, Chavez, 58, announced in a letter on Tuesday that he was going to Havana for therapy known as "hyperbaric oxygenation" - a method used to reduce bone decay caused by radiation therapy.

Communist Party daily Granma confirmed his arrival in Cuba.

In Havana, Chavez enjoys the friendship of past and present Cuban leaders Fidel and Raul Castro, plus guaranteed privacy on the tightly controlled Caribbean island.

Venezuelans, who have been endlessly speculating about Chavez's cancer since it was discovered in mid-2011, were not sure what to make of the latest twist - debating whether it was normal post-radiation treatment or a serious downturn.

"I really don't know what he has," Chavez's cousin, Guillermo Frias, told Reuters from the president's rural hometown state Barinas. "But anyway, I always pray for him every night. I stop at a shrine on the corner and always remember him.

"I hope he recovers fine. I'm sure he will. The election campaign was tough for him. He went too far."

Though he had declared himself cured, Chavez appeared exhausted at the end of his successful presidential re-election bid in October. He later admitted radiation had taken its toll.

"INVISIBLE MAN"

The normally garrulous and omnipresent leader has made only a few, relatively short public appearances, mainly on state TV, at his presidential palace since his October 7 win. One opposition newspaper dubbed him "The Invisible Man".

Unlike multiple past trips to Cuba, during treatment for three operations on two tumors in his pelvic area, state TV did not show images of Chavez departing or arriving this time.

Chavez has an open-ended authorization from Congress to travel, but aims to be back at least for the January 10 start of his new term, if not for a couple of regional summits before.

His absence leaves newly appointed Vice President Nicolas Maduro, 49 - a former bus driver and union leader - in a prominent position amid speculation among Venezuelans over who could replace Chavez should he leave power.

Congress head Diosdado Cabello, a former military comrade of Chavez's, also is frequently touted as a possible successor to lead the ruling Socialist Party. Under the constitution, an election would have to be held if Chavez leaves office within the first four years of his new six-year term.

Chavez's return to Cuba overshadowed the buildup to state elections on December 16, where the opposition aims to overcome disappointment at the presidential loss to make inroads.

A prolonged absence could potentially postpone major policy decisions, such as a widely expected devaluation of the bolivar currency after heavy pre-election state spending.

After removal of a first cancerous tumor, Chavez wrongly declared himself cured in late 2011. He again pronounced himself cancer-free in mid-2012 after removal of a second tumor.

BONDS RISE

The hyperbaric oxygenation therapy, or HBOT, he was due to receive involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber.

In addition to the bone-weakening side effects of radiation on cancer sufferers, experts say HBOT is used to treat conditions including infections, abscesses and decompression sickness - or the "bends" - that can afflict deep sea divers.

Nelson Bocaranda, a prominent pro-opposition journalist, said Chavez had been suffering intense pain in his bones and waist area of late, forcing him to rest and take pain-killers.

In his widely read "Rumors" column on Wednesday, Bocaranda published a supposed medical report from Havana's Cimeq hospital, with a relatively uninflammatory diagnosis.

"It's a matter of giving him therapy for pain and stabilization so he has a better quality of life," said the report, which could not be confirmed.

"His physical state is normal; loss of weight reasonable; high tension constant; abdominal nausea and pains; good emotional state but with variable depression; tolerable pain thresholds and reaction to treatment applied. He's rested in recent days and had little pressure from government functions."

Venezuelan officials, who frequently decry Bocaranda as a gossip and liar, gave no details of Chavez's health. One medical source with knowledge of Chavez's treatment said the HBOT may last several months and was a common "palliative treatment."

An opposition leader, Henry Ramos Allup, demanded transparency from the government. "The president's illness is a matter of state. The country has the right to know how exactly how serious it is," he said.

Given investor hopes for a more market-friendly government, Venezuela's widely traded bonds not surprisingly have risen.

On the streets, there was both solidarity and skepticism concerning Chavez.

"He exploited this thing of going to Cuba during the election campaign," motorbike taxi driver Omar Rivas, 55, said, noting the wave of sympathy Chavez received in the past.

"That man doesn't have anything. He was never sick."

Teacher Ana Maria Garcia, 26, had a kinder reading.

"I don't understand what he has, but I hope he recovers quickly. He's a winner," she said.

Mega-risks that could drive us to extinction

The end is not nigh, but it could be unless we constrain our own technological ingenuity. That's the warning from an initiative in Cambridge, UK, that wants to create a centre to focus on huge, technological hazards that could wipe out the human race at a stroke.

These dangers would include robots that escape our control, nuclear war, doomsday plagues designed in laboratories, and devastation from climate change triggered by human activity.

"We're talking about threats to our very existence stemming from human activity," says Martin Rees, a professor of cosmology and astrophysics at the University of Cambridge. Along with Cambridge philosopher Huw Price and Jaan Tallinn, inventor of Skype, he has founded the Cambridge Project for Existential Risk.

Wrong focus

Rees says we focus too much on tiny risks that are widespread, such as trace contaminants in food, and too little on massive, one-off risks that could wipe us out. To counteract this, Rees, Price and Tallinn are proposing creating a Centre for the Study of Existential Risk at Cambridge.

"We don't think enough about low-probability, high-impact events, where one might be too many," says Rees. "The financial crash is a good example of something not predicted, and there will be other events of that type that have never happened before, but which we need to anticipate," he says. The centre would, hopefully, forestall our extinction by exploring how these mega-risks can be predicted and controlled.

AI threat

"We need to take seriously the possibility that there might be a 'Pandora's box' moment with artificial intelligence that, if missed, could be catastrophic," says Price. That critical point might come when computers can write their own programs, he says.

New concerns about "killer" robots also emerged last month in the US, where the non-governmental organisation Human Rights Watch released a report entitled Losing humanity: the case against killer robots.

"Giving machines the power to decide who lives and dies on the battlefield would take technology too far," says Steve Goose of Human Rights Watch.
