Construction Jobs Increase Nationwide | Work for LGI Homes

Unemployment in the construction industry is at its lowest since 2008, having dropped 2.2% over the past four months. The unemployment rate in the construction sector has continued to decline since 2009. The month of July also saw a large decrease in the number of first time claimants for unemployment from the construction industry. Construction jobs continue to increase as spending within the industry increases. This is great news for both the construction industry and housing markets across the country. Half the states across the country and the District of Columbia posted construction employment increases between June 2011 and June 2012. While the housing market and construction industry is still fragile, the increase in employment opportunities is extremely positive. As cities across the country find themselves with decreasing vacancies, the number of construction jobs should continue to increase.

Construction Worker Job

Employment opportunities for construction workers are increasing nationwide, along with average hourly pay.

The District of Columbia added 2,100 jobs over the year showing the greatest increase in the percentage of construction jobs within the industry. After Washington D.C., North Dakota, Montana, California, Texas and Arizona rounded out the list of largest increases in construction employment. Texas and Arizona alone created nearly 40,000 new jobs in the construction field. Places like Austin and Phoenix are seeing booms within their respective states mostly due to the decrease in housing vacancies.

Not only are jobs increasing but over the past four months the average hourly wage for construction employees has also increased. Even non-supervisory positions have seen an increase in wages making construction work a viable option for those looking to get into an industry from the ground floor. There are many different jobs within the construction industry and all are seeing an increase in available positions and income even as the summer comes to an end.

The increases in positions are not directly tied to the unemployment rate within the industry. Unfortunately positions have not increased back to the level reached during at the height of the construction boom in 2008. While the unemployment rate has dropped, part of the reason for the drop is the exodus of qualified workers as they seek out employment in other areas. Even with this piece of information the Associated General Contractors of America are hopeful that the trend of a decrease in unemployment and an increase in available jobs will continue to help the industry.

The private sector has contributed to the increase in available positions but government contracts for road, bridge and school construction has also mad a big impact on the industry. As long as spending for these necessary infrastructure improvements continues to be available, the construction industry will continue to see a boom in available jobs. As construction jobs continue to increase month after month proof that a full recovery is on the horizon becomes apparent. The increase in business construction has positive connotations for not only the construction industry but multiple business sectors as well.
