Lawmakers, White House discuss sexual assault

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A bipartisan group of lawmakers aiming to combat sexual assault in the military says the White House is fully supportive of its efforts.

Obama senior adviser Valerie Jarrett met Thursday at the White House with members of the House and Senate to discuss steps to stop the growing number of sexual assaults in the uniformed services.

Republican Rep. Mike Turner of Ohio, a sponsor of legislation and a participant in Thursday's meeting, said the group discussed the various bills in Congress.

The meeting was requested by the White House, and it comes after a report this week estimated that as many as 26,000 military members were sexually assaulted last year. President Barack Obama has said he has no tolerance for the problem and that the Pentagon must confront it head-on.
