Mercedes-Benz S-Class: Beneath the Gloss, a Seriously Slimmed Chassis

Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cutaway

?

Mercedes-Benz's new S-Class is getting oodles of press for its veritable smorgasbord of luxury items, from heated armrests and?an aromatic atomizer to hot stone massagers and self-driving capabilities. Though this big daddy sedan is loaded to its gilded hilt with virtually every amenity you could possibly dream up, the 2014 S-Class hits 60 mph in an estimated 4.8 seconds-- just as quickly as its predecessor-- despite an essentially carried-over engine that posts a nominal increase of only 26 horsepower.

?

Vigilant weight watchers will be the first to figure out how the '14 S-Class yields its win/win engineering, posting as many as 200 pounds shed compared to its antecedent. That said, the biggest four-door Benz's most beneficial feature is, arguably, one of its least visible attractions: its chassis. Beneath the shiny sheetmetal and Nappa leather is a hybrid bodyshell that combines aluminum and high-strength steel for an optimized balance between stiffness and light weight, which produces 50% more torsional rigidity.

?

Mercedes-Benz's hybrid construction isn't new-- in fact, their flagship S-Class model has been using the feature since the 1990s. But thanks to a more than 50 percent increase in aluminum usage, M-B's latest large sedan gets as much as 20 percent better fuel economy, while upholding the S-Class's years-old tradition of avoiding gas guzzler tax.

?

The Mercedes-Benz S550 will cost you a pretty penny when it hits U.S. showrooms this September. But thanks to its smartly configured bones, new S-Class should make you feel like slightly less of a fat cat as you roll down the road.
