(AP) ? The first of three suspects accused in the killings of five people and a cover-up fire at a Denver bar has made his first appearance in court.

Twenty-two-year-old Dexter Lewis stood silently, staring at the judge, on Thursday as he was advised of the potential charges against him.

Lewis was led out in chains and mouthed the words "I love you" to his mother. She says her son is an artist and expecting a baby with his fiance, and she doesn't understand the accusations.

Lewis pleaded guilty to robbery charges in Jefferson County in 2008.

The judge denied a motion from Lewis' lawyer to gain access to the crime scene, and declined to provide details of the investigation.
